If you are an angler just looking to get your feet wet in the world of sonar fishfinders, then you could do a lot worse than the PiranhaMax 170 from Humminbird. This unit is simplicity exemplified and yet it doesn’t compromise when it comes to features. And with a suggested retail price of $99.99, it is affordable under any fisherman’s budget.
The four inch high resolution display of the PiranhaMax 170 boasts an 8 level greyscale screen with a 240×160 pixel count. Three buttons located on the front panel are all that is needed operate the unit and navigate through the menus. Unobtrusive and compact, the PiranhaMax is easily mounted onto a tilt and swivel base that will accommodate many other in dash fish finder models when it’s time to upgrade.
The control unit is paired with a very powerful and versatile transducer. Depths of up to 800 feet can be reached with its 1600 watts of power emission. The transducer is either hull or transom mountable and is easily connected to the main control unit via the included 20 foot cable. The dual beam functionality of the unit allows for a wide viewable coverage area. 20 degree and 60 degree beams are emitted simultaneously and provide great bottom detail with a coverage area that is equal to the depth. And with the Fish ID feature, fish are clearly identified with symbols that indicate exactly where the fish are relative to the boat.
Feature rich, easy setup, simple operation, and unquestionable affordability are the hallmarks of this entry level sonar fishfinder. With a trusted name like Humminbird and it’s included one year warranty, the novice marine electronics user really can’t go wrong with the PiranhaMax 170.
