The Garmin GPSMAP 76 is a great handheld unit for boating. I kayak twice a week and carry this unit because it meets my navigational needs. It runs for over 12 hours on a pair of rechargeable AA batteries and is completely waterproof.
Using navigation software on my laptop I can upload previous trips from the Garmin GPSMAP 76 and save them as routes to be downloaded back into the 76 for my next paddling trip through same the area.
I can create hard to follow paths through the islands using my laptop, download the route into my Garmin 76, and then paddle the area following the GPS path. It is so easy to use and fun to paddle areas, that you would otherwise get lost in, without using the GPSMAP 76 for navigation.
Make sure you purchase the Garmin GPSMAP 76. The black and white unit can be bought on Ebay for less than $30.00 if you are patient. The color units are going for $100.00. Both are great fun and easy to use.
