We bought the Humminbird 788ci for one of our work vessels. I would not recommend this Humminbird combo unit. We have Lowrance gear installed on our other vessels and I should have stuck with that product. We were trying to save some money and needed a combo depth sounder chartplotter so we decided to give the Humminbird a try.
As the chartplotter combo reached one year of service, the unit had to go back to the factory for repair. It locked up and showed a DOS type screen when I tried to upload an updated waypoint file. We have large waypoint lists which we use for water sampling purposes.
One other issue I have with this model is the fact that the chart page won’t show all of the waypoint names, only a select few. Most of them will show when I zoom way in close, but I need to be able to see all of them even when the range is scaled up, this have not been a problem with our Lowrance chartplotters.
One other issue I have noticed, is the time it takes for the unit to lock onto satellites and find a position, it seems very long to me. I would spend a bit more money next time and go with another brand that solves these important issues.
